Home Economics & ICAN (Ideas for Cooking and Nutrition)
Our county's Extension home economics program helps strengthen family life. In a rapidly changing world, the challenges facing individuals and families in our county are great. With a problem solving philosophy, we strive to develop programs to deal with complex issues facing local families. We are helping people build leadership and other skills. We teach through group training sessions and local programs and community projects. We are dedicated to solving community needs, concerns and issues. The current Home Economics agent is Shannon Drake. Shannon has a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a specialization in clothing, textiles and fashion merchandising.
The Extension Agent Home Economics role in Otero County is to provide educational programs in the area of home economics and family life. She will be working with youth and adults as requested. Shannon will also be assisting in the leadership of the 4-H program in Otero County. Leadership & Volunteer Development
The Otero County Association for Family and Community Education is an active and vital part of the County Extension Home Economics programs. Currently, the Home Economist and the local FCE members work together to provide 3-4 community programs per year on various subjects of current interest. Several local FCE members take active roles at the District and State levels as well.
ICAN
I CAN stands for "Ideas for Cooking and Nutrition" and represents nutrition education targeted at low income New Mexicans. I CAN reaches both adult and youth audiences. This program offers intensive series such as hands-on sessions to their clients. Roseanne Lee is the program assistant and contact if you are interested or have questions about the I CAN program.
